Campus Death Cafe

January 28th 2025

I am an undergraduate transfer student double majoring in Anthropology and Gender and Women’s Studies at UC Berkeley. I have specific interests in archaeology, thanatology, social justice, and cultural resource management.

Conversations surrounding death and dying do not have to be as macabre as society often makes them out to be. First introduced in Switzerland before gaining attention in the US, Death Cafes can essentially be defined by their name: a welcoming and free environment that offers snacks and tea, while facilitating open discussion revolving around the topic of death. Although they are not meant to function as support groups or grief counseling, Death Cafes offer the opportunity to ask the questions and bring forward the thoughts that you may have been
trepidatious to voice in the open.

In a collective effort to increase awareness of death, we ask that you join us on February 11th for the first Death Cafe hosted at UC Berkeley. Location is TBD, but please reach out to Blake Palmer (lilyblake@berkeley.edu) for more information.
