New Year, New Fruits, New Souls

By: Jade Lomas

The Poetry Column of the Handprint invites students of all anthropological backgrounds to
create and share their works surrounding the field itself or their worldview through their major.
In various ways, poetry and anthropology flow into each other ever so graciously. “Anthro-
poetry” can range from turning your field notes into a poem, or writing prose of how you view
museums as an anthropology major. There are no set guidelines or definitions for how or what
anthropological poetry should look like. This column aims to facilitate and showcase the various
disciplines, lives, and works of anthropology in creative and liberating ways that traditional
academia writing may limit with its formatting and expectations.
Prospective students of all backgrounds are welcome to submit– no degree in Comparative
Literature required. Themed submissions will be announced occasionally but non-specific pieces
are welcome all the time.
For questions and/or feedback, please contact the column’s editor at jadelomas@berkeley.edu
